We were on the road by 7AM, after munching
of cheese & bread for breakfast. It was only 45 F… good day
for cycling over a mountain.
The Lookout Pass was not as long or as steep as the Stevens, but it still
took me a while to reach the top. Then we coasted down the other side
in Montana. Stopped for a coffee at the rest area. Coffee & cookies
were compliments of the town of Mullen. They were set up there to advertise
their community. We spent the rest of the day cycling on I90. The road
shoulders were wide, but someone had the bright idea to build rumble strips
right across the shoulder every 30 feet. It didn’t make for comfortable
cycling. It was fairly flat so we made good time, with a stop at St Regis
for some lunch and info. It was about 85 F today, so I was expired by
the time we reached Superior at 3PM. We walked around town ( all 6 blocks)
and had supper at Rosie’s Café. Biscuits & gravy is on
evry menu in Montana, but I haven’t tried it yet. The hotel owner
had lived here all his life. We sat in the lobby that evening while he
helped me lan our way thru Montana. It has become apparent that we are
going to have to stay close to I90 because of motel availability.
